Life Drawing - Week 4
The fourth week of life drawing was looking completely at tona and how to show this in our drawings. Charcoal was the material I mainly used throughout this session. I used a piece of charcoal approximately an inch long so i could use it on its side to create larger and thicker pieces of tone.
This drawing particularly shows a good example of using just light, dark and mid-tone areas and minimal line. As you can see some parts are not outlined but because of the darker and mid-tone areas i shaded in the rest of the figure is obvious so what/where it should be.
Smudging the charcoal made it easier to create mid-tone shades.
Working on a mid-toned background of charcoal made it easier to make the ligher areas as i could erase them with a rubber and i added the darker areas with charcoal. I particularly enjoyed this method and i am very pleased with my outcome.
I did a second piece in the same method as my previous drawing but with a male model instead.
The final drawing i completed during this session was by working on a slight dull-white background as the mid-tone and then adding dark areas with charcoal, light areas with a white chalk and the mid to dark-ish tones i had to mix the chalk and the charcoal together. This was the method i least liked as i didnt like the smooth effect of the white chalk, i prefer my drawings to be more sketchy and i couldn't show this through chalk.
