Week 8 - Textiles

Textiles - Task 3

The final task for textiles was to create another two pieces of work on larger strips of paper. I worked from a colour pallete i create (in my sketchbook) by using inks and emulsion so i had a darker but brigher piece and one that was more washed out. I collaged my pieces similarly to make them look more of a pair.

I used the same object and created some quick simple line drawings to get my pieces going.

I really liked using white emulsion and masking-tape to block areas out on my piece therefore used this method again on my two larger pieces.

I turned my piece each time i layered a drawing over the top so that the drawings wern't all the same way.

Working over my pieces with white emulsion on a thin paintbrush really made an obvious drawing and added more to my piece.

Although they are both very different i can really see the similarities that make these two drawings one piece.

Week 8 - Textiles

Textiles - Task 2

Mono-printing is a quick and simple way of printing image onto paper and is something i have previously worked with before. I really like how you can layer colour over colour and image over image by repeatedly printing on the same piece of paper.

I worked with my still life object so create different lines quickly.

I find it interesting how each colour compliments the other, making your eyes move around the drawing.

Week 8 - Lifedrawing

Lifedrawing - Task 2 - Ipad Drawings

The Ipad software was something i was totally new too. Firstly i found it difficult but once i knew how to use different brushes and make colours look more blended for tones it became much easier.

Working on a coloured background is something i wanted to experiment with as with my drawings it is always on white paper.

I really like how i picked out the dark and lighter areas within this drawing, the green background makes them much more obvious.

Week 8 - Lifedrawing

Life Drawing - Task 1

For the first half of the day we were drawing with graphite sticks. However, instead of using it like a pencil we were to hold it on its ride and draw with the ridges. This allowed me to create quick areas of tone too.

Out of all my drawings this is definitely my favourite. I really focused on not having an outlined drawing and building up tone on the body and behind the figure. I was really pleased with the facial features too as i normally struggle with this area of the figure.

Week 8 - Textiles - Designer/Artist Research

Textiles - Designer/Artist Research

Lotta Jansdotter

Lotta Jansdotter is a textile designer i came across on the design directory website. I initially liked her work for the qwerkyness of her work. I found an interesting quote from her website that explained her work. http://jump.dexigner.com/directory/2016

"Lotta’s work is about her life, and life is her inspiration. Her genius lies in exploring the beauty of everyday things. Drinking coffee from a pretty cup, writing notes on a hand printed card, dressing your child in the clothes you made him."

Her work is very colourful and gives a joyful feeling. She handprints her drawn-art onto surfaces and makes multiples of these on different fabrics. She began her own small company of making pillow cases, table linens and bags.

There isnt a particular pattern or piece of work i chose to write about as i really like her collection as a whole. I find her designs very cute and lady-like and i really see the possibilty of places they can be used.

Natasha Kerr

Natasha Kerr is an artist i have researched for previous projects. Her designs are based around her old family photographs. I find her work very collaged as she used a lot of different materials to create a piece, something i admire and sometimes do myself.

I like how she has included the use of lettering, something i included in one of my previous projects.

Week 8 - Textiles

Textiles - Task 1

Unfortunately i missed the first lesson of textiles therefore had to catch up within the secon lesson. We were working on collages backgrounds made out of different paper and envelopes. We worked from still life objects, in my case i looked mainly at this metal tap for my first piece.

I began by using a brownish ink to paint in the negative space so that the white areas was a similar shape to the object. i then turned my drawing around and worked back in to it with an orange ink to paint a silhouette of my object. I used red pastel to create quick drawings with my opposite hand. I then used graphite to create a more detailed drawing. Masking tape was useful to block out areas where my drawing went wrong or just to give it something extra.

My second drawing was working with the same object but i used different materials. I began by adding in the negative space with a grey ink. I used pastels to draw in part of my object however i think i focused too much on the object as i started to look at tone and shading. Emulsion defined my object as i used it to add in a background effect behind my drawing. I did the same with masking tape which really made my object stand out.

The second object i looked at was some type of shoe.

Although the colours around the shoe were all bright i wanted to swap it around and use a compelte different colour palette. I compelted this piece with my opposite hand, which is why i think i don't like it as much as i really like to have control over my drawings.

For my fourth piece i worked from some sort of dried up fruit. The colours around this object were all blues and greys therefore i decided to work with these colours this time.

I began by blocking areas in with white emulsion and drawing quick continuous line drawings with graphite.

With the object being dark i used a brown pastel to draw another copy of the same object.

I liked the effect and contrast between the blue/grey background i created and the dark drawings therefore created another with orange/brown ink which sunk into the emulsion slightly, leaving a textured look on the surface.

I think this piece looks quite empty and could have been worked into more maybe with more darker drawings as the main thing i can see is the background.

Week 7 - Photography - Photographers

Photography - Task 3

The first photographer i chose to look at is Fay Godwin. I found her work is mostly of landscapes/scenery in Derbyshire. The contrast between the black and white in this photograph is something that first caught my eye as it is very obvious and noticable. I think that it has quite a cold eery feeling to it, i simply thought this because the weather itself looks stormy but the beach itself is isolated, which made me want to know why it was.

The second photo is by Henri Bresson. This is yet again another black and white photo. The first thing i actually notiaced was the spiral stairway and the metal railing. With it being spiraled it really made my eyes follow it round. I like how the biker seems out of focus, most likely for it was moving quickly when the photo was being taken.

Imogen Cunningham is a photographer who i found looks up closely as objects, mainly flowers. Detail is something i like in most of my work so in this case the detail on the photograph and on the flowers is the first thing i noticed, it really had me looking at the photograph. With there being no background my attention was all on the main object.

This photography by Paulo Roversi made me thing of fragility and vunerability. This may be for the reason that the model doesn't look as if she is wearing any clothes, which i would initially think would make someone vunerable and unable to protect themselves as much.
