Week 4 - Applied Arts - Ceramics

Ceramics - Task 2

The second task for the ceramics project was using a method called sgraffito. This is where i applied a white slip to cover the red clay and allowed it to dry. Once it had dried a little i used pointed knifes and other tools to draw/scratch into/through the white slip or even remove it so that the red clay shown through.

I like how these lines have different widths in them from where the clay has shown through.

Digging into the clay worked interestingly as it made the white slip and the clay sort of mix together to create a slight pink-ish coloured effect.

My tester piece shown i am able to work with this method. From specialising in applied arts (ceramics) for the national extended diploma i am very familiar with the area especially this method as i have used it many of times. Although i have already done applied arts i didn't really enjoy this small project as it was nothing new to me and i have done bigger experiments in my previous college course.
